TikTok's latest decision to ban AI-created filters has ignited a firestorm of reactions on X and elsewhere, with users polarized between anger and relief. Rolled out in the earlier part of this month, the move is targeted against filters that use artificial intelligence to alter appearances or create artificial content, a staple of the app's creative world. While TikTok hasn't delineated the degree of the ban, X posts suggest it's in response to mounting concern over disinformation and "fake" content—such as the infamous "chubby filter" deleted earlier this year due to body-shaming controversy. On the one hand, creators are outraged. "This kills the fun," one X user posted, expressing a sentiment that AI filters are a main mode of experimentation and self-expression. Artists who have relied on filters to make surreal videos or turn themselves into cartoon avatars feel their wings clipped. "TikTok's whole vibe is creativity—why stifle it?" another user posted. The ban threatens part of the platform's appeal, where quirky, AI-generated effects become viral.

On the other hand, supporters are applauding what they perceive to be a moment of defiance against dishonesty.

"Good riddance to artificial faces," said one X post, responding to a call for honesty in an app criticized for promoting unattainable standards of beauty. Health experts, still reeling from the "chubby filter" scandal, have long warned that AI-filtered content is unhealthy for the mind, especially for teenagers.
